World University Rankings 2024

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 include 1,906 universities from 108 countries and regions, based on the new WUR 3.0 methodology. This methodology uses 18 performance indicators to measure universities in five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook. This year, the analysis looked at over 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars worldwide. Overall, 411,789 data points were collected from more than 2,673 institutions.

The University of Oxford is ranked first for the eighth year in a row. Stanford University moves up to second place, pushing Harvard University to fourth. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) climbs to third, and the University of Cambridge drops to fifth. The highest new entry is Italy’s Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, ranked in the 301-350 brackets. Most of the new entries are from Asia, showing the region’s growing importance in higher education.

The United States has the most universities on the list, with 169 institutions, including 56 in the top 200. India now has 91 institutions, making it the fourth most-represented country, surpassing China, which has 86. Four European countries—Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Armenia—are included in the rankings for the first time, unlike last year when all new entries were from Africa.

Stanford University ranks highest in teaching, while Oxford and Cambridge lead in research environment. MIT is first in research quality, previously called the citations pillar. The University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates scores highest for international outlook, and 28 institutions achieve a top score of 100 in the industry pillar. Additionally, 769 universities are listed as “reporters,” meaning they provided data but did not meet the criteria for ranking and agreed to be included as reporters. Trusted by students, educators, governments, and industry experts worldwide, the 2024 rankings provide valuable insights into the changing global higher education landscape.
