In a world where understanding and empathy are paramount, The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) has been at the forefront of fostering meaningful connections among diverse communities through its Cultural Exchange service programme. Recently, the programme’s heart-warming final gathering served as a poignant testament to the transformative power of this initiative, bringing together students from various backgrounds to celebrate a year filled with rich cultural exchanges and profound learning experiences.
Throughout the year, students participating in the Cultural Exchange service programme have embarked on a journey of mutual sharing and discovery, transcending barriers of language, ethnicity, and tradition. The recent gathering, the culmination of their efforts, was a jubilant occasion marked by laughter, camaraderie, and a shared appreciation for the myriad cultural festivities that shape our collective identities.
Representatives from partner schools including Hewavitharana MV, Sri Jayawardenapura Hindu Vidyalaya, Roman Catholic Tamil MV, and Al-Hijra Muslim Vidyalaya gathered to recount their favourite cultural traditions, ranging from Ramadan and Sinhala and Tamil New Year to Thai Pongal and Christmas. The exchange of experiences was not only enriching but also served to foster a deeper understanding and respect for each other’s heritage.
Moreover, the event was graced by esteemed guests, including Mrs. Priyangika Walpolage, Deputy Director of Education for the Western Province, and Dr. Mechum Purnell, OSC Secondary Principal, whose inspiring speeches underscored the significance of cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration in today’s globalised world.
As we bid farewell to Matthew and Zach, the outgoing Service Leaders whose dedication and passion have been instrumental in driving the programme’s success, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for their invaluable contributions. Their tireless efforts have not only enriched the lives of countless students but have also laid the foundation for a more inclusive and harmonious community.
The Cultural Exchange service group, with its focus on bridging divides and fostering intercultural understanding, has emerged as a beacon of hope and unity in our increasingly interconnected world. With 40 students from four different schools coming together each week at OSC, the programme has become a vibrant platform for cultural exchange, language learning, and friendship building.
As we reflect on the achievements of this past year, we look ahead with renewed enthusiasm and commitment to continuing this remarkable journey of cultural exploration and mutual respect. With the unwavering support of the Ministry of Education and the dedication of our students and educators, we are confident that the Cultural Exchange service programme will continue to thrive and inspire generations to come.
