Celebrating Excellence: SLIIT’s 31st Annual Convocation Marks the Largest Convocation in SLIIT’s History


The March Convocation of SLIIT, the country’s most prestigious and well-recognised non-state higher educational institute, was held from the 19th to 22nd of March 2024 at the SLIIT Auditorium. It is the 31st Annual convocation ceremony of the Institute and is the largest convocation in SLIIT’s history. The convocation was a grand affair, spanning over four days and consisting of 12 sessions.

The Chief Guests who were present at each session included Prof. Ranjith Dissanayaka, President – Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka, His Excellency Paul Stephens, High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Prof. Nadeera Karunaweera, President – National Academy of Sciences Sri Lanka, Mr. Iwan Rutjen, Deputy Ambassador – Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netharlands, Dr. Nayana Dehigama, Founder/Executive Chairman – Epic Technology Group, Prof. Jan Domin, Executive Dean, Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies and Science – University of Bedfordshire, Mr. Ravi Jayawardena – Group Chief Executive Officer Maliban Biscuit Manufactories, Dr. Karl Jones, Head – MSC and BSC Programmes – School of Engineering – Liverpool John Moores University and Mr. Thushera Kawdawatta – Chief Executive Officer – Axiata Digital Labs.

Over 2,000 students were conferred degrees in various disciplines including both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The degrees included Computing, Business, Engineering and Humanities and Sciences. The ceremony also saw students receiving their Master’s Degrees in various specialisations. The ceremony witnessed a plethora of students delivering exemplary performances across various fields of study. These exceptional achievements were duly recognised and rewarded with the coveted best performance awards, both in the gold and merit categories, setting a high benchmark for future graduates to strive towards. This year the best performance awards were sponsored by MAGA Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, Virtusa (Pvt) Ltd, ITX 360 (Pvt) Ltd, Zone 24×7 (Pvt) Ltd, GTN Technologies (Pvt) Ltd, Dialog Axiata PLC, CodeGen International (Pvt) Ltd, Sampath Information Technology Solutions, Walkers CML, AVI, Bank of Ceylon, Six Sigma Management Institute Asia, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (Inc), Suchith Mohotti Associates (Pvt) Ltd and IFS R&D International (Pvt) Ltd.

Established in 1999, the SLIIT has the largest student population among non-state sector universities in Sri Lanka. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in a variety of disciplines, such as computing, business, engineering, education, science, quantity surveying, design and architecture, biotechnology, nursing, law, financial mathematics, psychology, hospitality and culinary and event management. The growing number of research papers published in high-ranking journals, affiliations with international universities, and the success of the quality graduates produced to attest to SLIIT’s efforts to become a regionally recognised knowledge university.
