The Legacy of a Lifelong Educator: Remembering Mr. R.I.T. Alles

1932 – 2013

In a world that often rushes forward, forgetting the quiet heroes who shape its future, the name R.I.T. Alles stands as a beacon of unwavering dedication to education. He was not just a visionary but a man whose life was a living testament to the power of nurturing young minds and building a nation from the classroom outwards. His impact, though carved into the hearts of many, continues to inspire a new generation of students and teachers alike.

Born on the 3rd of October 1932, Ralph Ignatius Thomas Alles was destined for greatness. He began his educational journey at St. Aloysius’ College in Galle, and later at St. Anthony’s College in Kandy. A teacher at heart, he found his calling at Royal College Colombo as assistant principal, where he witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of education. It was here he recognized the importance of preparing future leaders by instilling strong values, discipline, and a thirst for knowledge.

In 1967, Mr. Alles took a bold step in founding D. S. Senanayake College on what was once a barren patch of land, affectionately known as “Koombi Kale.” His vision transformed this space into one of Sri Lanka’s most respected schools. His approach was revolutionary, building not just a school, but a family of students and teachers who shared meals under trees and embraced one another as ‘Aiya’ and ‘Malli.’ He believed in creating a culture where students weren’t just individuals but members of a larger family.

Mr. Alles was more than an educator; he was a father figure to his students. He didn’t just teach academics—he taught life. He nurtured every student like they were his own, addressing them affectionately as ‘Putha,’ instilling values of unity, discipline, and compassion. His leadership style was human, compassionate, and deeply personal, a rare quality in today’s world.

His legacy didn’t stop with one school. As State Secretary of Education from 1989 to 1993, he oversaw the entire nation’s schools, touching lives across the island. Later, through the Gateway Group, he carried his mission forward, blending principles, love, and innovation to create educational institutions that continue to thrive today.

To this day, teachers trained under his guidance remember his words: “Teaching is not merely a job, but a gift with endless opportunities that allows you to create and mould great individuals.” He believed teaching was a lifelong gift an art form capable of shaping the future. His heart-warming interactions with students and teachers alike showed the world what education can truly achieve when rooted in compassion.

Even as age slowed his steps, Mr. Alles remained dedicated, rolling through school corridors in his wheelchair to visit classrooms and check on students. His commitment never wavered, and neither did the love he inspired in those around him. His devotion was not simply to academics but to the wellbeing of every child in his care.

To the teachers who continue to walk in his footsteps, remember his message: education is the foundation of a better world, and every child is a ‘darling student’ deserving of attention, guidance, and love. To the students of today, let his story remind you that true success is not just about knowledge but about kindness, discipline, and unity.

Mr. R.I.T. Alles was a man who lived to serve others, and his life stands as a reminder that the true legacy of an educator is not found in textbooks but in the lives of those they touch. His story continues to inspire, echoing across generations and reminding us that the heart of education lies in creating a better, kinder, and more thoughtful world.

As we remember this great man, let us all strive to carry forward his spirit of dedication, compassion, and the belief that every student has the potential to make a difference.
