Sri Lanka’s All-Girls ‘FlexiMind’ Team Shines at APICTA 2024

The ‘FlexiMind’ team, an all-girls group from the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), achieved significant success at the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards 2024 held in Brunei. Competing against participants from over 17 countries, they secured the First Runners-Up position in the Tertiary Student Project Applications category.

The team comprises four talented students from SLIIT’s Faculty of Computing: Vithya Sangkavi, Kaushani Wijesundara, Lochani Jayawardhane, and Arani Wijerathne. Their project, ‘FlexiMind,’ showcases exceptional technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, reflecting the high standards of SLIIT’s academic programs.

Prior to their international success, the team earned national recognition by winning gold at the National Best Quality ICT Awards (NBQSA) in October 2024. This victory qualified them to represent Sri Lanka at the APICTA Awards, where they continued to excel on a global platform.

The APICTA Awards are prestigious, aiming to foster technological innovation and collaboration across the Asia-Pacific region. The 2024 event in Brunei featured numerous participants, with the ‘FlexiMind’ team standing out for their innovative approach and dedication.

The team’s success is a testament to the quality of education and mentorship at SLIIT. Under the guidance of their supervisor, Dr. Dilshan De Silva, and the supportive faculty, the students demonstrated remarkable commitment and teamwork.

This achievement not only brings pride to Sri Lanka but also highlights the growing prominence of women in technology. The ‘FlexiMind’ team’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration for young women aspiring to enter the tech industry, showcasing the potential for success through determination and innovation.

In addition to the ‘FlexiMind’ team’s success, Sri Lanka performed admirably at the APICTA Awards 2024, securing a total of 10 awards. This impressive haul placed Sri Lanka fifth overall among participating countries, underscoring the nation’s growing influence in the global ICT sector.

The ‘FlexiMind’ team’s journey reflects the importance of providing opportunities and support for women in STEM fields. Their success at the APICTA Awards is a significant milestone, encouraging further participation and achievement of women in technology, both in Sri Lanka and internationally.
